Pero en Detroit hay una larga tradición de creatividad bajo presión, y muchas veces se ha manifestado a través de la música: el sonido de la Tamla Motown, que dominó la música popular de los años 60, la maestría de Aretha Franklin, el llamado sonido Detroit de rockeros como Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger o el grupo MC5... la música de la ciudad ha tenido siempre unas raíces obreras y ha expresado sin filtros la verdad sobre las realidades de la vida.
